About the place
Eastgate is a couple of miles east of Stanhope, where you will rejoin the official route. As accommodation in this part of the world is limited, the expansion of the Cross Keys is indeed welcome.
Eastgate originally marked the eastern border of the vast hunting park of the Prince Bishops of Durham. The founder of the world's first department store was born in the village - one Emerson Muschamp Bainbridge, of Bainbridge's in Newcastle.
