C2C - Route 71
Route Section: Keswick > Mungrisdale
From Start: 62km (39m) | From Finish: 165km (103m)
Penrith 24km (15m)
Alston 58km (36m)
After crossing the river beyond the pub you can either
a) go immediately right and follow the Route 71 signs back to A66 cycle path then follow the road for 3km before turning left for Greystoke at the Sportsman's Inn.
Or b) follow the lane through the village before going right at the chapel. Go past Moss Dyke farm and take the first right through Berrier before rejoining Route 71 to Greystoke.
Some may wish to miss out Mungrisdale and follow the path next to the A66. Shame on you. That's not what the C2C is about!
About the place
Mungrisdale provides a magnificent dog leg to the route, a mighty loop through some lovely countryside taking you to an old inn by the river Glendaramackin. The hamlet has a population of just under 300 and boasts St Kentigern's church (built 1756) and the pub. If you are trying to get to the end of the C2C quickly you will not be visiting Mungrisdale. But the whole point of the C2C, surely, is to enjoy places like Mungrisdale...
You reach it from a gated road from where there are some of the most spectacular views of the fells. Souther and Blencathra lie to the west and the Ullswater fells to the south, while to the east the daunting prospect of the Pennines loom imposingly.
